about

(attributed to Turlough O’Carolan)

Numerous entries for this tune exist under various different titles but it is most likely the basis for “The Wounded Hussar” and several scholars have speculated on the true identity of Captain O’ Kane, though most believe it to have been a certain Captain in the French service and a survivor of numerous battles only to return aged and wounded to his birthplace where he was greeted with contempt and outlawed and made homeless by the English government.
The authority on O’Carolan, Donal O’ Sullivan could find no definitive evidence of O’Carolan’s authorship of the tune, but agrees that its blend of Irish traditional and Baroque styles was a signature of the work of O’Carolan.
According to The Traditional Tune Archive, “the song "The Wounded Hussar" was written to the melody by Alexander Campbell (O'Sullivan gives his name as Thomas) and appears in Smith's Irish Minstrel (Edinburgh, 1825). It was also included in Surenne's Songs of Ireland without Words (Edinburgh, 1854). The Scots poet Robert Burns wrote his song "The Chevalier's Lament" to the tune of "Captain O’Kean.”
